Matthew Merighi

Mighty warrior,

Greetings and welcome to NCSC XXXVI’s Rise and Fall of Empires: War Council of the Mongol Great Khan! I am sincerely pleased to see that you have selected this committee for your NCSC experience.

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Matthew Merighi and I am a senior in the Georgetown College of Arts and Sciences majoring in History and Government. This will be my fourth (and sadly, final) NCSC and third year working on the conference’s historical joint crisis simulation.

The time of the Mongolian Empire is one of the most engaging in all of history. In just a few short decades, the Mongol people went from being a small tribe on the steppes to conquering large swathes of Asia. Under their leader Genghis Khan Temujin, the Mongols challenged the other nomadic tribes of the steppes, the northern Chinese, and the Kwarism sultanate in Central Asia, crushing all in their path.

Our committee begins in the year 1228 at a fractious time in Mongol history. Genghis Khan has just died one year previously and his son, Ogodai, has succeeded him. The Mongol domains now extend over a vast distance between Yellow Sea and the Caspian Sea.. The question now is: where to go next? The steppes of Rus to the north west? The Caliphate lands in the Middle East? The Indian subcontinent? Korea? Southern China? Japan? All of the states that surround the empire are waiting for conquest; it falls you to decide which ones will be first.

The Background Guide will provide a good selection of information regarding this dynamic period of time but I hope you also do some individual research in the intervening summer months. Any books that you can find on Mongol history will undoubtedly be helpful. I personally recommend Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford. It is a real page turner and was the book that originally inspired me to study this period of time.

Once again, thank you for choosing what will be the best committee at NCSC XXXVI! The entire staff and I are very excited to have you with us. Please feel free to email me at any point with any questions or concerns you might have.

With the gods of the Holy Mountain by our side, we shall chant three huzzahs over the broken remains of our enemies.
