Philanthropy

About Philanthropy

At its core, NCSC serves to connect delegates from across 24 committees to the direct impact of their work. As we welcome hundreds of delegates and staffers alike this November, we believe it is our responsibility to actively engage with real-world issues happening in our local, national, and global communities. Each year, NCSC and NAIMUN, our sister-conference for high school students, partner with a charitable organization to provide an approximately five figure donation and, in the process, raise awareness about significant social justice issues.

Our Partner

NCSC LI was proud to partner with AsylumWorks, a DC-based nonprofit organization that works to empower asylum-seekers and other forced migrants in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia to rebuild their lives safely and with dignity. In the words of Founder and Executive Director Joan Hodges-Wu, it is part of their mission to help “make the invisible visible.” Given that there are no formal institutions to support the safety, health, and well-being of asylum-seekers and forced migrants in the United States, AsylumWorks fills the gap by providing culturally-sensitive and therapeutic case management, employment and career development services, legal navigation, and community engagement opportunities. We invite you to explore more by visiting AsylumWorks’ website: https://asylumworks.org/.

By partnering with a medium-sized organization based in DC, our team hopes to combine the collective efforts of NCSC secretariat, staffers, and delegates to make a tangible difference. The donations received from this year’s conference will be used to expand the capacity of AsylumWorks: for example, a donation of $500 will facilitate the resettlement journey for an individual, and a donation of $1,750 will provide critical services and care for an entire family of four.

Get Involved

Our team has been working hard to raise as much money as possible for AsylumWorks. Throughout September and October, we have organized fundraisers for Georgetown students and staffers.

During conference weekend in November, delegates and staffers will have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways, which are listed below:

DAY 1: Thursday night, November 3rd: Crepeaway Fundraiser (12:30AM-1:30 AM)

Satisfy your late-night crepe craving and dance on tables during the return of NCSC’s widely popular Crepeaway night! Mention NCSC at the cashier for 30% of proceeds to be donated to AsylumWorks. Located at 2001 L St NW, Crepeaway is a short 20 minute walk from the Hilton.

DAY 2: Friday, November 3rd: Panera fundraiser (6AM-9PM)

Enjoy comfort food in between or after committee sessions at Panera! Order for pick-up or delivery either in-person or on Panera’s website. Type in code FUND4U for 25% of proceeds to be donated to AsylumWorks. Located at 1528-5 Connecticut Avenue, Panera is a quick 10 minute walk from the Hilton.

DAY 3: Saturday, November 4th: Marketing & Opportunities Fair (8AM-10AM in Columbia)

For the first time in NCSC’s history, we are excited to showcase our philanthropic partner at our Marketing & Opportunities fundraiser, where delegates and staffers can meet AsylumWorks representatives, learn about active volunteering and internship openings, and network with those in the nonprofit sector.

EVERY DAY: Candygram orders and donations

Give into your sweet tooth (and heart) and order a candy gram or limited edition plushies for yourself, a friend, or special someone! Orders can be placed at this link (https://tinyurl.com/ncsc-candygrams) or at the Philanthropy Desk.

We also warmly welcome any donations made during committee or at the Philanthropy Desk through cash, Venmo (@girc-gira), or Zelle (cfo@modelun.org). If using an online platform, please specify “phil” in the description.

Delegates and staffers can work together to reach specific goals for each committee and get their Dias to complete must-see incentives, like being pied in the face!

NCSC and Beyond

Through our partnership with AsylumWorks, we want delegates, staffers, and advisors to interact with all that DC has to offer - both its promises and its hardships. Further, we hope you will reflect on the interconnectedness between issues in international relations that lead individuals to seek asylum and the struggles that forced migrants face right in our backyard. We are confident that by the end of conference weekend, delegates and staffers will carry both increased awareness about asylum seekers and a spirit of philanthropy back to their local communities, and we are excited to take this journey along with you.
