Feeling a Little Peaky?: The Andean Community, 1990
It’s 1990. In the highest region of the Americas, the peaks rise high—but the challenges rise higher.
The nations of the Andes stand at a crossroads. From Quito to La Paz, from Bogotá to Lima, leaders dream of integration—of forming a regional bloc strong enough to stand tall against the great powers of the world. But before unity can be achieved, old scars must be addressed.
Despite the creation of the Andean Pact decades prior, unresolved territorial disputes, clashing nationalisms, and deep-rooted questions of sovereignty continue to haunt the region. How can a community be built when its members still fight over the borders that define them? Can we loosen boundaries when we haven’t even agreed where they lie?
Delegates will face the critical challenge of negotiating land claims, mediating regional tensions, and finding consensus where none yet exists. Who owns what — and who decides?
At the same time, a storm brews from within. Across the Andes, populist leaders surge to power, fueled by fiery rhetoric, sweeping promises, and mass support. National pride clashes with regional vision. Will charismatic movements bring people together—or tear the region apart in their quest for political dominance?
This committee brings together politicians, indigenous leaders, grassroots movements, business elites, and revolutionaries alike—all with one question in mind: can the Andean Community become Latin America's boldest experiment in supranational unity?
Or will they, divided by history and haunted by pride, fall short of the summit?
Co-Chair:
Moira Christ
-
Moira is an undergraduate in the Class of 2026 studying International Politics, German, and African Studies, and is also pursuing a Master of Science in Foreign Service with a concentration in Global Politics and Security as a member of the Class of 2027. She is unbelievably excited to meet you all and chair “Feeling a Little Peaky? The Andean Community, 1990.” Moira has been involved with Georgetown MUN since stepping foot on campus, chairing and staffing at both NCSC and NCSC’s sister conference NAIMUN each year (always in GAs!). This will be her last collegiate conference, so she can’t wait to make it the best one yet!
Outside of MUN, Moira works as a writing consultant at the Georgetown Writing Center, is a Sexual Assault Peer Educator for Georgetown University Health Education Services, and is a peer advisor for incoming first-year School of Foreign Service students. She studied abroad in Singapore during her junior spring, spent a gap year in Germany through the U.S. Department of State’s CBYX program, participated in various programs in Tanzania and Ghana and, unfortunately, will literally never stop talking about her experiences abroad. Moira interned for the U.S. Department of State in summer 2023 and will be interning on Capitol Hill on the Senate side in summer 2024. You can typically find her buying her third coffee of the day at an overpriced cafe or researching her next trip on Google Flights. She can’t wait to watch you all summit the steep challenges of Andean diplomacy and navigate the fault lines of integration, insurgency, and identity this NCSC!

Madeline is a member of Georgetown's class of 2026, where she studies in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, majoring in International Politics with a concentration in International Law, Institutions, and Ethics, as well as minors in Spanish and Art History. Since then she has continued to staff both NCSC and NAIMUN GAs and has loved every minute of it. She is excited to continue her time with GUMUN by chairing “Feeling a Little Peaky? The Andean Community, 1990!” Outside of MUN, Madeline works for Georgetown University Campus Recreation as a Customer Service Representative and Swim lessons Instructor. In her free time, she enjoys exploring DC museums, and taking long walks with her dog, Indigo. Madeline is thrilled to be chairing this committee and can’t wait for an unforgettable weekend!
