An Eye for a van Eyck: The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Unit Board, 1944
As World War II ravaged Europe, wartime destruction and Nazi looting caused the disappearance of thousands of pieces of priceless art. The Allies’ solution: The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Unit Board (MFAA). Later known as the Monuments Men, the MFAA was created to safeguard the remaining pieces and track down the missing artwork. Composed of museum curators, art historians, and military leaders from across the Allied Countries, the MFAA was a voice for the cultural preservation of historical sites and artwork during the military conflict.
With Germany’s defeat imminent, the MFAA must decide the value of historical monuments amid the Allies' final military advances. Although the war is ending, the Iron Curtain begins to fall over Europe, and the MFAA must race to save priceless treasures before they fall into Soviet hands. The painstaking task of returning these invaluable works of art to their rightful owners has only just begun…
