Battle of the Giants, 2023:
The Big Tech Coalition

This committee will simulate the European Commission and Big Tech following the passage of the Digital Market Act. Delegates will be investigating the compliance period between September 6, 2023 and March 6, 2024, in which companies ruled as gatekeepers have to comply with obligations listed in the Digital Market Act passed by the European Commission in 2022. An informal coalition of tech companies, big and small aimed at trying to navigate the new realities of the digital market under the Digital Market Act. Represented companies will include Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft and several smaller companies.

Delegates from differing companies will attempt to increase stock prices, gather investors, and foster innovation. Amidst the changing market following the passing of the Digital Market Act, companies must look out for their personal interests without triggering further restrictions. In order to gain flexibility, Successful delegates will simultaneously promote relations with nations while also maximizing profit and projecting as a leader in the market. Rather than a war type committee, this JCC aims to expose more of the connection between business and government, international trade, supranational organizations, and how tech regulations can be nuanced and impacted by global events.

Chair: Jaskeerat Kaur Thakral

Crisis Manager: Sarah Chao

Jaskeerat Kaur Thakral is in Georgetown University’s College of Arts and Sciences Class of 2025. Jaskeerat is a Biology major on the pre-med track, and has minors in Medical Humanities and Science, Technology, and International Affairs. Growing up in Bangkok, Thailand, Jaskeerat is interested in a global perspective in healthcare and medicine, and hopes to further explore the liminal space between interdisciplinary fields like anthropology, psychology, international relations, and medicine. She is thrilled to serve as your chair for the Big Tech Coalition of the JCC: Battle of the Giants! Jaskeerat is incredibly excited to see the highly pertinent, interdisciplinary topics in this committee come to life, and witness the interactions and challenges between the Big Tech Coalition and the European Commission in their hunt for cooperation.

You can often find her exploring museums or hanging out with friends at the Georgetown Waterfront. She is very excited to welcome you all to Washington D.C. and serve as your Crisis Manager for the Battle of the Giants JCC: Big Tech Coalition.

Grand Crisis Manager: Ishan Datey

Ishan Datey is in the School of Foreign Service Class of 2025, majoring in Science Technology, and International Affairs and minoring Religion, Ethics, and World Affairs.
