Martial Flaw: The Cabinet of Choi Sang-Mok, 2024
On December 3, 2024, South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol suddenly declared martial law in South Korea, sending a bastion of democracy into chaos.
Yoon has been struggling to govern faced with a National Assembly controlled by the opposition liberal party, the Democratic People’s Party. In a desperate attempt to maintain his power, Yoon declared martial law in a televised address to South Korea in the middle of the night, accusing the Democratic People’s Party of collaborating with a hostile North Korea to spread communism and establish a dictatorship. The declaration rocked the democratic foundations of South Korea’s government, prohibiting political gatherings, halting the free press, and arresting political opponents. The National Assembly has the power to overturn martial law, but will they have the votes? Will President Yoon’s rule continue, or is impeachment on the horizon?
South Korea is deeply acquainted with martial law’s dark history in dictatorships, coups, and anti-democratic crackdowns during the late 20th century. It is up to the delegates of the National Assembly to determine how to proceed. Will South Korea be able to contend with the threat of North Korean interference? Will this be the death knell for democracy in East Asia? With the eyes of the international community on South Korea, it is up to the delegates to resolve a spiralling democratic crisis.
