There’s an Imposter Among Us: Project ECHELON, 1962
The year is 1962 and the Cold War is in full swing. As the intelligence tsars of the USSR weave their web of spies and informants across NATO, the Western world scrambles to counteract their influence. Key to their efforts is Project ECHELON: a signals and intelligence-sharing operation among various NATO nations dedicated to monitor the diplomatic and military communications of the USSR, People’s Republic of China, and other Eastern Bloc nations. While not formally established until 1971 and expanded by the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, the network as it currently stands is one of the West’s main countermeasures against the Non-Western World.
1962 may prove to be ECHELON’s trial by fire as American intelligence confirms that the Soviet Union has placed missiles, most likely ballistic nuclear missiles, on its ally of Cuba, right off the coast of the United States. It’s up to the agents of ECHELON to discern the locations of the missiles, ascertain their purpose, and recommend solutions to deal with the threat. It’ll take the full might of a united NATO to take on the Soviet bear. However, ECHELON agents should be wary, as several reports from the internal security divisions of several ECHELON partner nations have reported the existence of Soviet spies and KGB agents in ECHELON’s ranks! NATO agents will need to take great care to find the moles among them before they compromise the entire population.
