Battle of the Giants, 2023:
European Commission
This committee will simulate the European Commission and Big Tech following the passage of the Digital Market Act. Delegates will be investigating the compliance period between September 6, 2023 and March 6, 2024, in which companies ruled as gatekeepers have to comply with obligations listed in the Digital Market Act passed by the European Commission in 2022. The European Commission is a part of the European Union’s (EU) executive branch. The EU is a large political and economic union consisting of around 27 member states. The Commission represents the body which frames the EU's direction in terms of policy, the initiation of new laws, and managing funding mechanisms.
In line with the EU's mission, values, and law, the aim of the Digital Market Act is to allow for fair and open digital markets within and amongst member countries. The Act is an important element of the EU's overall digital strategy and general tech-related policies to provide opportunities for businesses and citizens. Representing Commissioners from each member country, delegates will seek to maintain the integrity of the Digital Market Act and potentially propose legislation regarding other tech issues, related social or EU wide issues, while supporting their own personal approval ratings from their constituent countries. Rather than a war type committee, this JCC aims to expose more of the connection between business and government, international trade, supranational organizations, and how tech regulations can be nuanced and impacted by global events.
Chair:
Anagha Chakravarti
Crisis Manager:
Aaron Chan
Anagha Chakravarti is in Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service Class of 2025. She is an International Politics major, an International Development minor, and doing a certificate in European Studies. Outside of staffing Georgetown’s MUN conferences, she has been involved with the International Relations Club (IRC) as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and serves as the Chair of the IRC for the school year 2023-2024. She is very excited to welcome you all to Georgetown's campus and serve as your Chair for this committee. The JCC: Battle of the Giants is a highly relevant and interdisciplinary committee and delegates are encouraged to focus on the dynamics between the Union and the influence of Big Tech on society. The committee is about working together despite different stances, views, and alignments for a united cause and to reach a consensus to preserve the legitimacy and work of the Commission. Most importantly, this committee and NCSC is all about the delegates. This conference will mark Anagha’s 4th and final NCSC and she is excited to bring this committee to life alongside Aaron and the JCC staff.
Aaron Chan is from Millburn, New Jersey, and is a member of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service Class of 2026. He is a Business and Global Affairs major while minoring in Psychology and International Development. Within Georgetown’s MUN conferences, he has served as both crisis analyst and crisis manager for NAIMUN XL, NAIMUN XLI, and NCSC LI. On campus, Aaron has served as the Georgetown International Relations Club’s Chief of Staff and is the IRC’s new Chair for the 2024-2025 academic year. For hobbies, Aaron loves procrastinating his homework by reading fantasy books and growing plants because university regulations won’t let him keep pets. He is very excited to welcome you all to Washington D.C. and serve as your Crisis Manager for the Battle of the Giants JCC: European Commission committee.
Grand Crisis Manager:
Ishan Datey
Ishan Datey is in the School of Foreign Service Class of 2025, majoring in Science Technology, and International Affairs and minoring Religion, Ethics, and World Affairs. He is from South Riding, Virginia, which is about an hour out from D.C. Ishan is a former NCSC USG (shoutout to JCC) and has staffed multiple conferences with Georgetown. Ishan spends most of his time grinding homework for classes (who isn’t), but outside of school you can find him at the many Dharmic/South Asian events on campus, hanging out at the library (pretending) to work with friends, and occasionally holed up in his room playing the latest video games.
