Hell of a Year: The USS Nimitz, 2020

On April 27, 2020, the USS Nimitz departs Bremerton, WA, for a routine 6 month deployment. Over the next 11 months, as the deployment is extended time after time to deal with crisis after crisis, the 50-year-old ship and its crew will be tested and strained again and again as the international sphere threatens to burn around them.

This committee will follow the Nimitz's path through its deployment, as the committee executes the ship’s missions while keeping the crew alive and happy and the ship in working order. In this unique committee, delegates must choose which of several international crises the ship will respond to while simultaneously working to keep their battered ship and crew together as the stresses of deployment threaten to break them down. Delegates will be at the mercy of the waves as they work to navigate the stresses of international conflict, with surprise twists and unique forms of timed crises to boot. At the end of the day, the only thing delegates can trust on the high seas is themselves, their crew, and their ship — and this crisis will push all of them to their absolute limit.

Chair:
Rebecca Zhu

Crisis Manager:
Peyton Austin

Rebecca Zhu is a member of Georgetown University’s School of Health Class of 2026 majoring in Health Care Management & Policy. Rebecca is a proud Marylander and DMV local. She was first introduced to Model UN in middle school and the two have been inseparable ever since. She previously served as Under-Secretary-General of General Assemblies for NAIMUN LXI (NCSC’s sister conference for high-schoolers) and Chair of JCC Texas Power Crisis: Abbott’s Cabinet, 2021 for DistrictMUN IV (Georgetown’s middle school Model UN conference). Outside of Model UN, Rebecca enjoys debating with the Philodemic Society, doing mad science with the Physics Department, being the photographer friend, and hunting for DC’s best London Fog. She is incredibly excited to run this naval committee with Peyton and can’t wait to meet you all at NCSC LII!

Peyton Austin is a member of the Class of 2026 in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, majoring in International Politics and minoring in Chinese. Born and raised in Hong Kong and currently living in Basalt, Colorado, Peyton was introduced to MUN as a sophomore in high school, and since then he’s never looked back. He has competed with Georgetown's collegiate MUN team, and currently serves as the Director-General of NAIMUN LXII, Georgetown's high school Model UN conference. He’s also staffed both NCSC, NAIMUN, and Georgetown’s local conference, DistrictMUN, in the past. He enjoys working out, socializing, and getting the chance to explore the beauty of D.C in his spare time (L.A Burdick makes a FANTASTIC hot chocolate if y’all are interested). Peyton, with Rebecca, is excited to welcome delegates aboard the USS Nimitz at NCSC LII, and is looking forward to seeing what the delegates do with such a nontraditional committee setup!
