High and Dry

Cape Town Day Zero Water Crisis, 2017

The year is 2017, and Day Zero is rapidly approaching

“The day Cape Town, South Africa, will run out of water. ”

The year is 2017, and Day Zero is rapidly approaching. A whole city is anxiously counting down the days until April 12, 2018, as their survival becomes more precarious with each passing day. Day Zero is not from a Sci-Fi movie. It is the day Cape Town, South Africa, will run out of water.

Cape Town’s 4.3 million residents all rely on 6 winter rain reservoirs and dams to sustain their water needs.  Since 2015, however, the region has experienced an unprecedented multi-year drought. By 2017, water levels were hovering at a dangerously low 14% capacity. Scientists predict that if drastic action is not taken, Cape Town will become the world’s first major city to run out of municipal water. That day is rapidly approaching.

Delegates are tasked with preventing what may become one of the largest humanitarian crises in history. Whether through water conservation or proposing alternative water sources, delegates must implement solutions to combat the water shortage before it’s too late.
